History of Göreme turkey

In pre-historic times a massive volcanic eruption flooded the plains of Cappadocia with lava to a depth of up to 50 meters, and it is this layer of soft rock which gradually has been eroded into the amazing landscape that you see today.

From Neolithic times man has made use of the naturally occurring caves of the area for shelter, and as the rock is so easily carved it was not long before deliberate dwellings were being carved into the faces of the fairy chimneys.

A refuge for the early Christians fleeing persecution then rock caves around Göreme including more than 1,000 early churches covering periods from the 6th century through to the 12th century when the Ottomans took over the area.
